COPAKE, N.Y. — Copake Auction will hold its 44th annual New Year’s Day auction on Monday, January 1, at 10 am. This sale will feature 758 lots that the gallery gathers throughout the year to include in this annual auction. This year features a variety of estates including items from the actor Edward Hermann’s estate in Salisbury, Conn. The auction will be live online at www.liveauctioneers.com and www.invaluable.com. Absentee bidding is available through www.hibid.com or www.auctionzip.com. The auction will be live in person (opening at 9 am the day of the auction). Absentee and phone bids are available in-house as well. Previews will run through December 31, 10 am until 4 pm daily.
This sale will feature a quality assortment of period furniture and furnishings. Highlights include a circa 1690-1700 American two-part oak and walnut press court cupboard, pictured on page 190 of Wallace Nutting’s Furniture of the Pilgrim Century. Another highlight is an Eighteenth Century Pennsylvania painted and decorated poplar cabinet with drawers, along with a painted and decorated hanging cupboard. The set’s provenance: Wallace Nutting Collection (1919-1924), purchased in its entirety in 1925 by the young J. Pierpont Morgan, who donated it to the Wadsworth Atheneum Hartford (deaccessioned in 1911). It was featured in Wallace Nutting’s Furniture Treasury, 1928.
Also included in the sale will be eight sets of chairs, lots of period seating, card tables, candlestands, tiger maple furniture and more. From a Norwich New York estate will be an Eighteenth Century mahogany Rhode Island highboy. Several tall case clocks will be sold as well as period banjo clocks. Tavern and farm tables will be sold as well.
A collection of 15 windmill weights, carousel animals, whirligigs, eagle wall plaques, 25 weathervanes, game boards and more, plus tramp art and irons from the Dave and Sue Irons collection will be included. Ten quality quilts will be sold. From a New Jersey estate will be a Nineteenth Century blue and white coverlet signed and dated “Delhi 1837.”
More than 100 paintings will be sold. These include 25 Nineteenth Century portraits, seascapes, primitive landscapes and outsider art. A selection of posters and lithographs will be sold, including magic posters and a Salmson “10HP” poster by Rene Vincent (French 1879-1936) from the Edward Hermann Estate in Salisbury, Conn. Highlights in artwork include an original John George Brown watercolor, a Ben Austrian painting, Alan Fearnley auto-related artwork and more. Twenty sandpaper drawings will be sold as well as ship woolies, samplers and hooked rugs.
Unusual items include a collection of Mexican Revolution signed documents from a Connecticut estate, all professionally framed, including those from Pancho Villa and many other historical figures. Other autographs will be offered, including Herbert Hoover, Harry Truman and more.
A rare set of 11 Wilkinson “Allied Commanders of The First World War” pottery Toby jugs will be offered. The set of mugs includes figures such as Lord Kitchener, Admiral Beatty, Field Marshall Haig, Admiral Jellicoe, Marshall Joffre, Lord French, Lloyd George, Marshall Foch, General Botha, Woodrow Wilson and a rare prototype of King George.
Another unusual item of interest is a Victorian papier mache figure of lady reading book, titled “Fair Lady from Danbury State Fair.” This figure measures 16½ by 13½ by 46 inches.
Also, two graffiti vases by Angel Ortiz (LA II) will be included from a local estate.
