WILLOW, N.Y. — The James Cox Gallery at Woodstock will offer auction bidders a diverse group of exceptional art at its upcoming Sunday, December 10, auction. The online only sale will begin promptly at 1 pm.
Cox highlighted the eclectic quality of his next sale by pointing out that among the 200 items being offered are examples of turn-of-the-century artists as well as midcentury masters. “We are extremely proud to include two Albert Bierstadt paintings in this auction,” Cox noted. “Mountain Canoeing-Sweetwater River, Wind River Mountains, Wyoming Territory,” circa 1860, is a classic Bierstadt landscape depicting the grandeur of the American West. “Breaking Spray,” circa 1877) is an unusual composition for Bierstadt, featuring waves crashing against a rocky formation in the background, an intriguing expanse of shallow water stretching across the foreground.
Martin Johnson Heade’s (1819-1904) “Quiet River at Dusk,” (circa 1865-70) is also included in the sale. An example of Heade’s signature marsh scenes, this painting is included in Theodore Stebbins’s catalogue raisonné of the artist’s work
In recent years the James Cox Gallery has attracted a growing interest in midcentury American art. In light of this trend, the December 10 auction will include a Robert Indiana (1928-2018) oil on canvas “Triangle” (1967) and one of Andy Warhol’s (1928-1987) classic Campbell’s Soup silkscreens.
Canadian born artist Rolph Scarlett (1889-1984) is a familiar name to Cox auction bidders. “The Scarletts consigned to this sale are the best examples we have seen to date,” according to Cox. An oil, untitled (abstract), features the artist’s signature round and triangular non-representational forms, as do four works on paper, also included in the sale. “These compositions are so elegantly rendered,” Cox remarked. “I have never seen more exquisite examples of Scarlett’s work.”
Scarlett, who spent much of his career living and working in the famous Woodstock Artists’ colony, was also a gifted jewelry maker. Four Scarlett pendants were consigned to the upcoming sale by a Woodstock collector who inherited them from her parents, close friends of the artist. One piece, crafted in sterling silver and 14K to 18K gold, is studded with onyx, labradorite and healer’s gold gemstones. The other two, pendant necklaces, are made of sterling silver and various gemstones.
The Cox gallery represents several artist estates, including that of Elaine Wesley (1923-2007), a lesser known midcentury painter and etcher whose reputation has been growing over the past decade. The three oils in this sale are high-quality examples of Wesley’s diverse approach to subject matter, Cox observed.
Among the more unique pieces in the sale is a Miriam Schapiro (1923-2015) work titled “The Littlest Fan.” Distinguished as the leader of the Pattern and Decoration art movement, Shapiro was also a pioneer of feminist art known for incorporating elements associated with women into her creations. “This charming piece is a good example of that approach,” Cox noted.
A rare group of 12 woodblock prints by Winold Reiss (1886-1953) will also be featured. The 12 8-by-8-inch Art Deco-style prints depict the months of the year, Cox explained, adding that he devoted many years to assembling a complete calendar, which he is offering for sale for the first time.
African American artists Richard Mayhew (b 1924) and Romare Bearden (1922-1988) are also represented. “Mercy Blues” is a lithograph created by Mayhew in 1990. At 99, the artist, a former instructor at the Woodstock School of Art, is still actively painting in his California studio and exhibiting throughout the United States. Two of the Romare Bearden pieces are screen prints from his renowned “Odysseys Suite,” while a third, “Out Chorus” (1979-80), is a mixed media screenprint and watercolor depicting a group of jazz musicians.
Cox has included work from several other estates he represents, including two sculptures and two paintings by self-taught artist Joseph Garlock (1884-1980) and three oils by Margery Ryerson (1886-1989). Ryerson, whose work will be showcased in an upcoming retrospective exhibit at the New York State Museum, is also distinguished as the co-author with her teacher, Robert Henri (1865-1929) of “The Art Spirit,” a 1923 publication widely regarded as “The Art Student’s Bible.”
Richard Segalman (1934-2021) and Mary Anna Goetz (b 1946), two popular Woodstock artists, are also represented in the sale. Segalman’s “Woman in White” (2000) evokes the serenity so often evident in the painter’s reverent depiction of women. Goetz’s “59th Street Bridge” (2010) is an expansive view of the New York landmark, painted on site from an apartment overlooking the East River.
