CANDIA, N.H. — Schmitt Horan & Co. will host a two-day auction to inaugurate the opening of its new facility in Candia, N.H., on Saturday and Sunday, June 11-12. The sale will feature the horological material that the firm is well known for, as well as select offerings of Americana, fine art and Asian antiques. “We have been working diligently to ready the new facility for this event” said auctioneer Daniel Horan. “While we haven’t finished every upgrade and improvement, the new headquarters is sufficiently complete to host what will be one of our best sales in quite some time. We are very excited to join our clients and friends after a long nearly two-year absence from fully live auctions.”
Session one will begin at 11 am on June 11 and consists of 600 lots of horological material and some antiques, primarily clocks and clock parts. The sale will include American and European items, with many being sold in multiple lots. Session one is a live event and will be open to attendees only, with no absentee bidding of any kind. All purchases made on Saturday require payment and removal the weekend of the sale.
Session two begins at 11 am on June 12 and is open to attendees and absentee bidders alike. “We have our own internet-based auction platform, and also offer access through Bidsquare, LiveAuctioneers and Invaluable,” said Horan. “Participants may also bid on the phone, or leave bids to be executed on their behalf by our staff.” This portion of the sale begins with 93 lots of coins, currency and bullion, the majority dating to the Nineteenth and Twentieth Century, and of US issue.
The sale continues with Americana, fine art and accessories. Among the highlights are a recently discovered eagle with banner carving attributed to John Haley Bellamy, a rare embroidered and painted silk mourning picture by Mary Ann Bass, niece of President John Adams, an Orientalist oil on canvas by Charles Theodore Frere, a graphite on paper “Standing Nude” by Milton Avery and an oil on canvas featuring fishermen by the shore by Jean Antoine Theodore Gudin.
Asian antiques include two Chinese Nineteenth Century hardwood incense and plant stands, a Nineteenth Century Ninxia round end saddle rug, an early Nineteenth Century Ninxia runner, a Showa-era silver flower vase with box, and a Meiji-era ovoid vase with Moriage ornament featuring two dragons. Also on offer are a walnut Davenport desk, canes, early candlesticks and a mid-Nineteenth Century Russian silver and niello reliquary cross.
The sale continues with automatons and mechanical music, to include a Girl with Yarn and Cat, attributed to Leopold Lambert, a Turkish Dancer attributed to Roullet & Decamps, a bubble blowing polar bear also attributed to Roullet & Decamps and a few Twentieth Century pieces, including two by Jean Farkas. A few whistlers by Karl Griesbaum will follow, among them the rare Fox Hunter and Father Christmas models. Disc and cylinder music boxes will also be sold, by makers Polyphon, Regina, Mermod Freres and others.
A selection of wrist- and pocket watches will be sold, to include a rare Rolex ref. 5513 Submariner with gilt, underline dial, a Longines Paul Newman chronograph and a Gallet Jim Clark Multichron 12 chronograph. Pocket watch offerings include a gold Patek Philippe for retailer Albert Hansen of Seattle, an E. Howard series III, presented to iron magnate J.J. Spearman in 1870 and a gold Civil War-era Waltham Appleton, Tracy & Co.
A number of chronometers and deck watches will be offered, including a boxed deck watch with Bonniksen karussel signed Evan Roberts, a boxed, freesprung chronometer watch signed Johanssen & Co., and marine chronometers by Frodsham, Poole and Hamilton.
A large number of clocks will be offered, by both American and European manufacturers. Expected to be the sale’s top lot is an orrery clock by Zacharie Raingo. Dating to circa 1830, it is believed that perhaps 30 of these were made, and far fewer were equipped with the music box base. Provenance includes the Major Paul Chamberlain collection and the American Clock and Watch Museum in Bristol, Conn. Other notable French clocks include a pendule a l’enfant by bronziers Fuchere & Fossey, a large bisque and marble Urania figural with annular dial, a year running table regulator by Brocot for J. Silvani and a monumental gilt and silvered bronze figural signed Charpentier.
English clocks will include an engraved, hour-repeating carriage clock with electroformed dial by James McCabe, a Daniel Quare bracket clock in a later Eighteenth Century case, a gilt and patinated bronze figural timepiece signed Baetens, London, a papier mache bracket clock with glass cameo sulphide bust below the dial, an Eighteenth Century miniature gilt table clock by Ellicott and a skeleton clock with scroll frame and horizontal balance.
A selection of American clocks will be offered as well. One of the most impressive is a hanging regulator with a Waltham regulator movement and a Gothic Revival mahogany case attributed to furniture makers and designers Irving and Casson of Boston.
