PLAINVILLE, CONN. — Winter Associates has an auction on April 25 that reflects the fact that the firm specializes in estate liquidation. It will be an eclectic sale with a selection of paintings, prints, jewelry and silver, Handel and miniature lamps, silver, Tiffany, Steuben and Baccarat glass, a collection of Gouda art pottery, American and Continental furniture, Oriental carpets, etc.
From a Connecticut collection comes a selection of American art, including work by Alaska’s foremost historical landscape painter, Sydney Mortimer Laurence, as well as Oscar Berninghaus and Guy Arthur Wiggins. Laurence’s oil painting is a theme he repeats featuring a food cache and campfire. “Winter at the Metropolitan” by Guy Wiggins may be a more familiar scene to many than the wilderness landscapes of Alaska, but it is again the use of color and atmospheric perspective that draws the eye through the snow-covered streets and to the iconic doors of America’s largest art museum. Interestingly, at age 20, Wiggins became the youngest artist to have a work in the permanent collection of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, with the purchase of “The Metropolitan Tower.”
A wide range of Tiffany & Company wares are being offered, including jewelry, silver, glass and desk accessories. An 18K yellow gold, sapphire, ruby and diamond basket-form brooch is a featured lot, along with an 18K and ruby tie bar and cufflinks. An unusual small and sleek silver salver on ball feet is notable for its mixed metal copper inlay and is a pleasing juxtaposition with the Art Nouveau “Abalone” pattern five-piece Tiffany Studios desk accessory set from the early 1900s, elaborately inset with abalone discs. Also featured are three lots of signed Favrile Louis Comfort Tiffany art glass, including a pair of blue spiral candlesticks, a gold 8½-inch-wide iridescent bowl with undulating rim and a centerpiece with lily decoration and flower frog. From the same collection are two Steuben blue Aurene pieces, a flower-top perfume bottle and 6-inch vase.
Those interested in Connecticut artists will be pleased to learn that a second offering of Monroe, Conn., Burr Sisters artworks will be coming across block, as well as the first half of a representative collection of George Davidson works, a well-known Connecticut muralist raised in Waterbury and was active in Roosevelt’s WPA program. Both collections feature a variety of landscapes, drawings and portraits.
Also offered are two Handel lamps, including a Scarlett McCaw. Handel formed in 1885 in Meriden, Conn., to be a less expensive option to Tiffany’s glass lamps. Handel was known for its handsome, hand painted shades created by highly talented artisans; reverse painted shades required a painstaking painting process, with the finest details being placed first. It was only the depths of the Great Depression that was able to dampen Handel’s light, and they closed their doors in 1936.
Winter Associates’ auction catalog becomes available online as of Friday, April 15.
