NEW YORK CITY — Auctions at Showplace moves into the 2021 holiday season with a grouping of 280 lots from New York City metropolitan area estates on December 5.
Highlights begin with an oil on canvas depicting a street scene by Maurice de Vlaminck (French, 1876-1958), one of the leading figures of Fauvism. It is followed by an ink wash on paper depicting a road leading to a building in landscape, also by de Vlaminck. Next is a Steinway & Sons Grand Model B Art Deco period grand piano, manufactured in 1936, serial number 285256, with ebony finish and a leather upholstered and adjustable bench. Also of note is a Moba silver ornamental bowl delicately decorated with life-size enamel birds with diamonds in their eyes resting on branches heavy with enameled peaches and green leaves made of banded agate and green onyx. Moba was headed by Seymour Moss (1919-2011), who brought the art of Italian enamel to the American market post-World War II.
Fine art features a collection of Modern prints and multiples. The collection opens with a Modernist abstract lithograph by Joan Miro from an edition of 15. Next is a 1974 untitled etching and aquatint by Robert Motherwell numbered 27 from an edition of 31 from the “Dutch Linen Suite” (Engberg/Banach 132). It is followed by “Roth-Händle,” a 1974 aquatint and collage in color by Robert Motherwell number 18 from an edition of 53. Also featured is a 1974 aquatint depicting a female head by Alex Katz numbered 65 from an edition of 84. It is followed by Jim Dine’s 1970 lithograph “Dutch Hearts” numbered 18 from an edition of 85. An exciting offering is Sonia Delaunay (French-Russian, 1885-1979) “ses peintures, ses objets, ses tissus simultanés, ses modes,” a rare portfolio of pochoirs published by Librairie des Arts Décoratifs, Paris, in 1925, with a preface by Andre Lhote and poems by Cendrars, Delteil, Tzara, Soupault, with the original cover.
Paintings include works by Moshe Mokady, three lots of acrylics on paper by Eric Aho (American, b 1966) from his “County Mayo/Kansas Prairie Papers” series, along with abstracts by Marilyn Ann Lerner and Herman Kahan.
The sale features a collection of timeless Midcentury Modern classics from makers, including Herman Miller, Paul Evans and Knoll studio. The collection opens with an Herve Van der Straeten Modern pair of “Patmos” table lamps in gilt bronze with black marble bases, each with impressed marks “AB” and “HV” near base. Next is an Eames for Herman Miller lounge chair and ottoman both with black leather upholstery and maker’s label and patent label on the bottom. It is followed by two 1970s Paul Evans Brutalist Modern “Patchwork” side tables or coffee tables with steel, copper and bronze patchwork bases and square glass tops. Saarinen fans will find an Eero Saarinen for Knoll womb chair and ottoman in mohair upholstery and a set of six Eero Saarinen for Knoll Series 71 dining chairs with chromed legs. Next is a Florence Knoll for Knoll Studio Midcentury Modern upholstered sofa with chromed base and a Florence Knoll Midcentury Modern upholstered armchair with chromed steel base.
Additional highlights are a pair of Bang Olufsen Beolab 18 and 19 speakers designed by Torsten Valeur and an Alberto Giacometti pair of gilt bronze andirons in a Modernist abstract shape.
Also of note are a Maison Gerard Art Deco manner red lacquered cabinet on a macassar wood veneered base and pieces by Therien Studio Workshops Art Deco revival rectangular coffee table in carved wood, with maker’s plaque on bottom.
Decorative arts highlights include a collection of studio art glass. The collection opens with a 1999 Gundi Viviani-Finch Canadian contemporary studio art glass monumental abstract glass-on-glass sculpture and a Bertil Vallien for Kosta Boda large modern studio art glass vase in orange with multicolored glass flecks near the neck. The group continues with a Livio Seguso Italian Murano art glass vessel in scavo technique glass with diminutive side handles and snaking motif. The collection concludes with works by Josh Simpson, Stephen Dee Edwards and Peter Bramhall. Also of note is a Maurice Dufrene for Orfevrerie Gallia/Christofle French Art Deco silverplated tea or coffee set of four with ebony handles, created in circa 1925.
In time for the holidays, Showplace will offer a collection of estate jewelry. The sale also includes a collection of rare Chanel Runway costume jewelry, a vintage Louis Vuitton suitcase trunk and a Judith Leiber crystal butterfly minaudiere clutch handbag. Gifts include a set of eight bound volumes of French Vogue beginning with the October 1936 issue along with a collection of pens by luxury makers, including Cartier, Montblanc, Namiki, Omas and Parker.
