Coyle’s Auction will offer an unreserved, two-session antiques and estates auction on Tuesday, August 31, at the VFW in Medway. The auction will be an eclectic selection of period antique American, English and French style furniture, porcelain, cut and antique glass, artwork, sterling, jewelry, lamps, bronzes and much more drawn from New England homes and estates.
Oriental rugs will be offered in Session 1 at 2:30 pm outdoors in the pavilion followed by a special session at 3 pm indoors, which will feature paintings and art exclusively from the Beacon Street home of the late Smoki Bacon. She loved the city of Boston and was a fixture not only on the social scene of the city but also was very active helping to improve the lives of others through her volunteer and fundraising efforts as well as her civic activism. Bacon shaped Boston culture. She enjoyed antiquing at auctions and on Charles Street and loved to collect paintings and art, which she displayed proudly in her home that she shared with her husband. Her home was the site of many memorable dinners and events.
Coyle’s will offer for sale approximately 60 pieces of art, including paintings, etchings and prints. In addition, the sale will offer a 32-inch plaster figure of Massachusetts Civil War-era Governor John Albion Andrew signed “RG 1870,” which stood proudly on a shelf overlooking Bacon’s living room and library, which housed many of the paintings. The paintings, of which many are signed, are small landscapes, seascapes, portraits, etc. There is an oil on canvas of the Boston Fire of November 8, 1872, signed and dated “Fred E. Phelps, 1887,” depicting ships in foreground and the fire burning in the city with the State House dome visible. Some of the painting artists will include R. Kuper, Roger Deering, J.A. Cook, H. Hallett, Harry Miles Walcott portrait of man, J. Binder, V. Lebedev and others.
In addition, there are a pair of unsigned large seascapes (22 by 36 inches) with ships and lighthouse, which she purchased many years ago on Beacon Hill. There are several etchings, engravings and prints with signatures, such as Reynolds Beal, Peggy Bacon, E. Curtis plate 474 from 1924 photo, B. Messick, J. Marin, R. Weidenour, J.T. Arms group, W.G. Smith and much more.
Session 2 of the auction begins at 5 pm in the main part of the VFW hall. An antique period brass works cherry tall clock with broken arch hood and flame finials, a large antique American corner cupboard with curved back and bold moldings, farm table and sets of Windsor chairs and a Federal tall post acanthus carved bed will be some of the items to be offered from a large New England home as part of the Americana offerings. A pair of antique Italian-style painted marble top console tables are among the decorative furnishings, as well as French-style and custom furniture. Midcentury Modern furniture will be represented by a J. Ward Beam steel and glass coffee table.
