DELAWARE, OHIO — May has all the events: the Kentucky Derby, the Daytona 500 and the annual Americana and Ohio Valley Auction, presented by the Great Estates division of Amelia Jeffers, Auctioneers & Appraisers of Columbus, Ohio. It will take two days, May 16 and 17, to find new homes for the more than 1,000 lots on offer. Appropriate for the historical Barn in Delaware, where it will be conducted, the online and in-person auction is a throwback to the classic Americana auctions of 20-30 years ago.
Besides examples of furniture, decorative arts and ephemera with an Ohio Valley connection, this year’s annual event will include American furniture and decorative objects from Pennsylvania and New England, with select items from the 40-plus-year Americana collection of a Central Ohio couple; Sandy and the late Mark Keily (Cincinnati, Ohio); Mike and Marti Korba (Russiaville, Ind.); Connie and Harry Lockwood (Cincinnati); and English and American silver from Clearbrook Farms of Granville, Ohio. The lifetime collection of Tom and Lenore Karras of Geneva, Ill., previously slated for the auction, has been removed “and will be sold later this year,” according to Jeffers. “The auction was just becoming too big,” she continued, “and we try to create sales that are great for buyers and the consignors.”
Fine and folk art by the likes of Ohio artists Emerson Burkhart, Ernest “Popeye” Reed and Tella Kitchen will vie for attention alongside works by Ezra Wood, William Mathew Prior, Justus Dalee, Jacob Maentel and Mattie Lou O’Kelley, to name a few.
The highlight of the Ohio Valley session has to be the carved and inlaid diminutive (7 inches long) folk art slide lid wood box or etui dated “1857” by Western Pennsylvania gunsmith John Nicholas Matthesiee ($4/8,000). “A California picker found it at an estate sale of a Pennsylvania lady,” Jeffers explained. Jeffers sold a “sister” to this box for $13,000 at her November 29, 2024, event. “He was researching this box and found the one we sold in November. It was a great surprise when I opened the box a few weeks ago!”
Other Ohio Valley objects to be sold include sewer tile dogs, a Trumbull County tall case clock, a West Virginia pie safe and a Christian Shively, Jr, (1770-1836) two-piece walnut cupboard ($10/20,000) — all selling with no reserves.
Where silver is concerned, expect to see a variety of scarce forms and styles by English and American makers, including Paul Storr, Matthew Boulton, William Bateman, C. Oskamp, William Law, E&D Kinsey, Duhme & Company and others. “The silver is one of the best selections I have ever offered in one auction,” Jeffers noted. “The group has been assembled from a few consignors, most notably the Lockwoods and private collectors from Granville, Ohio.”
Day two will also see items from the collection of Sandy and the late Mark Keily being offered. Of special interest is a carved and gilt wood spread-winged eagle wall sconce ($1/3,000), a Philadelphia Chippendale breakfast table by Adam Hains, a set of chairs with an Israel Sack provenance and a pair of early painted chairs from the Jon Graeter collection. Offerings from Indiana show promoters and dealers Mike and Marti Korba will include an early wood candle lantern ($800-$1,600) previously owned by David Good and sold at Northeast Auctions in the Monahan Collection in 2001. The Korba Collection will also offer up an “ex Bill Samaha” early large turned burl bowl ($1/2,000) with terrific form and color.
“From formal to country, the items span the Seventeenth, Eighteenth and Nineteenth Centuries with some wonderful opportunities for furniture, watercolors, Shaker buckets, wallpaper boxes, stoneware…and even a great cane collection. It will all sell over the course of the two days!,” according to Jeffers. The catalog is now online at www.ameliajeffers.com.
