BEVERLY, MASS. — Kaminski Auctions will present an auction on Sunday, April 13, featuring a collection of rare and historically significant jewelry from the estate of Branimir Zivkovic, a celebrated fencing champion. This collection holds deep ties to European royalty and will be showcased at the Kaminski Auctions gallery, offering collectors and historians a rare opportunity to acquire pieces steeped in regal heritage.
Zivkovic was a world-renowned fencing champion whose skill and precision brought him international acclaim. Born into a family deeply rooted in European history, Zivkovic excelled in the sport of fencing, amassing numerous accolades throughout his career. Beyond his talent for fencing, he was also a devoted historian and collector, amassing a unique selection of heirlooms tied to the Karadjordjević dynasty. His collection offers a glimpse into the regal past of Yugoslavia and Serbia, preserving the legacy of some of the region’s most prominent rulers.
Born in Yugoslavia, Zivkovic moved to the United States in 1969, where he significantly influenced American fencing. He served as an assistant coach at Columbia University from 1969 to 1974. In 1976, he served as the head coach of Harvard University’s men’s fencing team. Zivkovic was elected to the USA Fencing Hall of Fame as part of the Class of 2023. He passed away in 2023, leaving behind a legacy that profoundly impacted the fencing community.
The auction will feature an array of jewelry, including pieces that once belonged to members of the Karadjordjević royal family. Among the standout items are a pair of 18K gold cufflinks bearing the initials “M & A,” representing King Alexander I of Yugoslavia and Queen Maria. Stamped with the maker’s mark “RB,” the cufflinks were a heartfelt gift from Queen Maria to her husband. The pair holds immense sentimental and historical value for the Karadjordjević dynasty. There is also a stunning pair of 14K gold and pearl hand-made earrings, initialed “AR” on the wire, weighing approximately 7.18 grams total. These earrings were once the personal property of Queen Helen d’Anjou (Jelena Anzujska), the wife of King Stefan Uros of Serbia, dating back to the Thirteenth Century.
A 14K gold, diamond and amethyst necklace with 14K gold chain, which is the former personal property of Queen Maria, wife of King Alexander I of Yugoslavia (reigned from 1921-1934). The necklace was given to Queen Maria by the King on the first-year anniversary of their marriage.
A 14K gold pocket watch from the International Watch Co., Schaffhausen is engraved with the initials “K & AI” and a crown above, measures 2 inches in diameter and weighs approximately 75.63 grams (including movement). It once belonged to King Alexander I of Yugoslavia, who reigned from 1921 to 1934. Another pocket watch with precious stones from the Schonberger & Company, Vienna, is a masterfully crafted pocket watch, weighing approximately 123.47 grams total (including movement), engraved on the back cover with “PI” and a crown, signifying King Peter I of Serbia. The bottom bears an inscription reading, “To Alexander – 11th of June 1914,” a touching tribute from King Peter I to his son, who would become prince regent of Serbia and later king of Yugoslavia.
These pieces, rich in history and elegance, represent some of the most significant artifacts of the Karadjordjević dynasty ever to be offered at auction.
With more than 15 total lots on offer from the Branimir Zivkovic collection, this presents a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for collectors, historians and royal enthusiasts to own a piece of European history. The jewelry’s impeccable provenance and direct ties to Yugoslavian and Serbian royalty make these items highly sought after by collectors worldwide.
In addition to the esteemed Zivkovic collection, the auction will showcase a diverse array of fine art, jewelry, silver and Chinese porcelains.
A notable piece is a California landscape oil on canvas by Granville Redmond, renowned for his vibrant depictions of the West Coast. The auction also features an early Nineteenth Century portrait, circa 1820, of an English officer from the 49th Foot, Princess Charlotte of Wales’s Royal Berkshire Regiment, rendered in oil on canvas. Additionally, two etchings by the Dutch master Rembrandt van Rijn will be presented, offering collectors a chance to acquire works from one of history’s most influential artists.
