LARCHMONT, N.Y. — Clarke Auction Gallery will host an auction on Sunday, March 9, at 10 am. Boasting more than 600 lots, the auction features stellar examples of works of art by listed artists, statement jewelry, antiques, Asian art and more.
“The auction is really strong across the board, even the things that are more modest in value are just really beautiful examples of what they are,” said Clarke specialist Whitney Bria. “Art is strong, and furniture is probably one of the strongest we have had in some time. There is a lot of jade in the Asian art category as well as Chinese ceramics.” In the jewelry category, which is her specialty, Bria said there are several standout pieces. One estate from Greenwich, Conn., alone yielded more than 50 pieces.
Works by renowned Puerto Rican painter/sculptor Angel Botello (1913-1986) are highly desirable and not often seen at market. Known for its antiques and art, Clarke has been able to seek out a few notable examples by Botello in recent years. Expected to perform well in this auction is “Nina con sombrilla (Girl with umbrella),” a signed 1972 bronze sculpture estimated at $8/12,000. It stands 23½ inches tall.
Other well-known artists round out the list of highlights among fine art. A signed David Burliuk (Ukrainian, 1882-1967) oil on canvas, “Travelers Stop,” estimated at $6/9,000, will cross the block. The avant-garde artist’s vibrant scene here epitomizes his expertise in storytelling. Two paintings by Jesus Rafael Soto (Venezuelan, 1923-2005) are also on offer. Estimated at $4/6,000 is the 1969 work, “Vibrations Metalliques,” edition 203/250, along with “Escritura,” a 1979 shadow box construction, edition 36/100, which is estimated $3/5,000.
The dominant hue in nature, green, is the signature color of emeralds, which continue to be popular in jewelry. Leading the jewelry offerings is an early Twentieth Century Marcus & Co., platinum ring centered with a natural Colombian emerald of 2.26 carats surrounded by 22 Old European cut diamonds with an additional six diamonds in the shoulder and eight single-cut diamonds on the band.
“It’s absolutely beautiful, exactly what it’s supposed to be and has all the bells and whistles,” Bria said, noting the accompanying certificate indicates it is of the finest emerald quality. “It has this incandescent glow to it that makes it so stunning.”
Another statement piece of personal adornment is a George III 18K gold verge fusee repeater pocket watch ($4/6,000), dated 1778, featuring an 18K yellow gold swing ring case, hallmarked with the Lion Passant Guardant, and embellished with a leopard’s head, validating its London origin.
The antiques category in particular is loaded with fine examples ranging from traditional and early pieces to modern. Among highlights is a Midcentury Silas Saendel dining table ($4/6,000) with a brass ribbon form and large plate glass top. The signed table measures 30 by 105 by 48 inches with its base measuring 29½ by 61 by 22 inches.
A pair of Nineteenth Century three-branch figural candelabra ($2/$3,000) came from a Greenwich estate that had the collector’s eye for quality. They are done in patinated and gilt bronze and raised on marble bases, standing 35¼ inches tall.
Also from the same estate is an antique paint-decorated penwork table with a whimsical Orientalist scene on the top of people fishing ($600/900).The table is well-executed and with a high level of detail. Its pleasing size of 26 by 22½ by 18½ inches adds to its desirability.
Estate goods were still being photographed and inventoried at press time, and this auction will also feature a pair of T.H. Robsjohn-Gibbings lamps, a pair of trumeau mirrors and more.
A good selection of Asian arts can usually be found at Clarke auctions, and this sale will not disappoint. Highlights include examples of Chinese jade in desirable colors as well as a monumental pair of Japanese Satsuma lidded jars ($2/3,000) displaying an elaborate festival on unmatched gilt wooden stands. The lids are topped by foo dog finials and stand 32 inches tall. A pair of Chinese enamel decorated cache pots as lamps mounted on wooden stands ($600/900) adorned with vegetal motifs, flowers, ruyi heads, and an archaic style pattern, measure 25½ inches tall.
Rounding out the auction are a Budd Hopkins oil on canvas, “City Sun II,” 1969, estimated at $1/$1,500, and a pair of after Maison Jansen bronze side tables having marble tops ($3/5,000).
