GLEN COVE, N.Y. — Roland Auctions NY will present its next multi-estates auction on Saturday, March 8, at 10 am, with offerings from several prominent estates, bringing together elements of New York City’s theatrical and art world past. These include the personal collection of American theater designer, artist and photographer Peter Wexler; the entire personal collection of more than 20,000 photographs and related items removed from the Harlem warehouse of photographer and antiques dealer Roger Prigent, whose Manhattan shop Malmaison became an Upper East Side mainstay; as well as a selection of African-themed silver pieces by designer Patrick Mavros and a fresh selection of couture from the estate of Baroness Gabriele Langer von Langendorff. In addition, Roland will present a large personal collection of items belonging to theatrical production/set designer Ed Wittstein and his art director partner Robert Miller, all removed from Wittstein’s estate brownstone in New York. Previews will be conducted on Thursday, March 6, and Friday, March 7, from 10 am to 6 pm.
The Peter Wexler (1939-2022) collection, all with no reserves, spans six decades of American theater and visual arts innovation. Featured is a 75-lot sale of personal property from his residence (including custom furnishings and reference library) alongside creative artworks spanning Wexler’s remarkable 60-year career, from his early University of Michigan studies to his final sculptural innovations. This auction presents collectors with a unique opportunity to acquire pieces from one of America’s most respected artists. Proceeds will support public access to costume and set design education through the Peter Wexler Digital Museum, a comprehensive online catalog completed by the artist before his passing.
Notable lots of Wexler’s own artwork include “The Rug Concerts” (1973), a poster designed by Wexler documenting his collaboration with conductor Pierre Boulez that transformed the New York Philharmonic’s classical music presentation at Lincoln Center ($100/200); “Challenger” (1982), an aircraft design illustration and model commissioned by former Sotheby’s chairman Alfred Taubman, showcasing Wexler’s sophisticated approach to corporate design ($200/300); and “Southern City Sculpture” (2011), a series of three stainless steel models with corresponding drawings, representing Wexler’s unrealized vision for a major public installation ($200/300).
Another important part of this auction will be a collection of rare guitars and guitar accessories from a prominent New York collector, which include guitars by Gibson, Gretsch, Fender, Hamer and PRS, with original hard shell cases and all documentation and certificates. Highlights from this collection include a 2010 Gretsch Chet Atkins model hollow body electric guitar made in Japan in 2010. It features a Bigsby tremolo, pearlized inlays, gold hardware, tritonic pickups, and comes in the Western orange stain colorway ($2,5/3,500); a 1998 Gibson ES175, single cutaway hollow body electric guitar made in the United States in 1998. The guitar has a vintage tobacco sunburst colorway and factory hardshell case is included ($3/4,000); a 2000 Gibson Les Paul Custom solid body electric guitar made in the United States in 2000. This Les Paul has an ebony colorway paired with all gold hardware ($5/6,000); and a Gibson 1956 gold top Les Paul reissue solid body electric guitar ($5,5/6,500).
Top lots in the art arena include a Jean Dufy (French, 1888-1964 ) “Au Cabaret” watercolor and gouache depicting figures dancing alongside a band; signed “Jean Dufy” to lower right. It is from the personal collection of an Upper East Side philanthropic family ($15/25,000). An Alexander Calder (American, 1898-1976) untitled (Swirl with Pumpkin) lithograph, 1972, is signed in pencil Calder lower right ($2/3,000).
Also offered are an after Titian “Venus With Mirror,” palatial allegorical painting on panel depicting Venus and putti, in an ornate gilt frame ($5/7,000); an after Brueghel or Rubens palatial painting on panel depicting “Madonna in Floral Wreath” in an ornate gilt frame ($5/7,000); and an after Amedeo Modigliani (Italian, 1884-1920), “Le Grand Nu” framed oil on canvas painting of a reclining female nude ($3/5,000).
Just a couple examples of midcentury modern furniture in this sale are a Folke Ohlsson for Dux Teak Scissor chair, Sweden ($800-$1,200) and a set of eight Niels Otto Moeller Model 71 teak side chairs ($2/3,000). Additional furniture will include a pair of Louis XV bronze and satinwood vitrines, painted porcelain mirrored back vitrine cabinets, Twentieth Century, vertically designed with scrolling bronze grille work, side door entry and glass shelves. The side panels are inset with painted porcelain landscape vignettes of lovers in repose ($2/4,000).
Notable decorative items include a Patrick Mavros figural sterling silver candelabrum of elephant mothers and calves with mopane, Zimbabwean, 1998, total 56 troy ounces ($5/7,000); Sèvres pair of monumental palace urns, French, Nineteenth Century, vasiform and decorated with bands of blooming flowers ($3/5,000); and a pair of Louis XV gilt bronze figural candelabra, French, Nineteenth Century, depicting Aphrodite with Cupid holding aloft a torchiere of 10 candle holders, decorated with scrolling acanthus motifs and berries ($1,5/2,500).
