As a singular figure in the world of American pottery and early textiles, Dr. Wahler was a celebrated curator, collector, and scholar. The single owner auction includes early Southern furniture and featuring four MESDA documented items: a very rare Virginia William and Mary paneled lift top chest, a Virginia Walnut paneled corner cupboard, a Tennessee inlaid cherry chest of drawers, and a Tennessee Federal cherry high chest; many early Southern painted furniture examples including a fine Southern pale green painted pie safe with punched tin panels with heart and star design; a wonderful group often Ulysses Davis folk art carvings from Savannah, Georgia; a large group of textiles including a rare Asheville sampler dated 1824, together with a Georgia theorom painted by another family member, Southern applique quilts dated 1861, and an 1894 example from Hawkins County, Tennessee; Southern salt glazed and redware pottery examples from Tennessee, Alabama, and North Carolina makers.
