Wolfs Gallery – Richard Andres Selected Works 1950 – 1975
June 09 – August 20
wolfsgallery.com
CLEVELAND, OHIO — Wolfs will present the exhibition and sale “Richard Andres: Selected Works 1950-1975,” featuring the early works of American abstract expressionist Richard Andres (1927-2013). The show will be on view June 9-August 20.
Richard Andres was an odd combination of an artistic hermit and a figure on top of the latest developments on the contemporary scene. After studying at the Cleveland Institute of Art on a National Scholastic scholarship, Andres immersed himself in painting, spending off-hours at the Cleveland Museum, focusing on artists such as Van Gogh and Matisse. When asked to describe his art, Andres struggled. “It’s hard to describe art. Art is something that’s there, to look at. So, words are very difficult. Essentially, the closest I can come is to say I’m a 1950s painter. The ‘50s was sort of an attitude toward art. It was going to be big. It was going to be strong. This great big group of painters had this attitude toward painting and it’s hard to pin it down because each painter was different. It really is a style that’s hard to define but the term ‘abstract expressionism’ is often used.”
According to 60’s critic Helen Borsick, “Technically, his paintings are abstractions, but that is only part of the story. Andres’ complex style of composition — strong in design and drawing — involves compartmentalizing the canvas with favorite signs, figurative allusions and symbols. Any degree of familiarity with his canvases develops recognition of his painting language and repeated forms as well as of the endless nuances of color tints and overpaint and underpainting methods.”
Some of Andres’ inspiration came from other artists, once stating that Edward Munch, Emile Nolde and Max Beckmann ranked within his top ten most admired painters. While often being his own worst critic, Andres grew content and more relaxed later in life, saying, “For years, I’d do a painting and say, ‘But it’s not good enough. You try to achieve something and you overachieve it but it’s still not good enough. I finally did a painting and looked at it and said, That is good enough.’ From that point on, the older paintings got better in my own mind.”
While with his finger always on the pulse of his more famous contemporaries, Andres was content to simply produce, preferring to avoid the limelight.
Director Michael Wolf of Wolfs describes his discovery of this trove of “masterful abstraction expressionist works” as “a rare and wondrous event,” and comments that it evokes “the heady times of the midcentury American art world.”
A fully illustrated catalog with more than 50 works, including an essay by Dr Henry Adams accompanies the exhibition and can be purchased for $20 post-paid.

Copley Fine Art Auctions – The Sporting Sale 2022
July 14-15

617-536-0030
PLYMOUTH, MASS. — On July 14 and 15, Copley Fine Art Auctions, the decoy and sporting art auction house, will conduct its 17th annual Sporting Sale. This auction, consisting of 675 lots, one of the company’s largest to date, will offer buyers the opportunity to acquire world-class paintings, antique decoys, bird carvings, folk art and powder tins from important collections. The auction will be live-streamed and will utilize phone, absentee and internet bidding on three different online platforms, including CopleyLive, Bidsquare and Live Auctioneers. The auction will begin at 10 am on both Thursday and Friday.
The auction will include offerings from two important du Pont collections, a descendant of Eugène E. du Pont (1882-1966) and a descendant of Thomas Coleman du Pont (1863-1930). The du Pont objects include previously unknown A. Elmer Crowell (1862-1952) bird carvings and 68 antique powder tin lots. Eugène E. du Pont was a personal friend of Elmer Crowell’s and, as such, obtained his decoys directly from the maker. Du Pont’s woodcock, ($70/100,000), mallard drake, ($50/80,000) and blue jay ($15/25,000) are sure to entice bidders. Thomas Coleman du Pont was the great grandson of the company’s founder. Along with his cousins, Thomas bought out the family’s explosives business and then served as the firm’s president from 1902 until 1915. This important powder tin collection features major American manufacturers, such as du Pont, Laflin & Rand, American Powder and King and Hazard.
Copley principal Stephen O’Brien Jr said, “In addition to the estates and private collections, several notable individual works have been consigned to this sale. We’ve been fortunate to land two major Taits in a row. His well-documented “Steady” ($50/80,000), depicting two setters pointing quail, is notable for its bright composition and sublime condition. This painting really speaks to me. Though I grew up a New England bird shooter, I owned and hunted setters, and I have found wild quail second to none.”
O’Brien continued, “The vast majority of the estate pieces are unreserved and carry no estimates, so it should be a very exciting auction for our clients. We really like putting the auction in the hands of our bidders. In an age where many auction firms place high reserves and have unverified results, our ethos is to let the buyers choose their own levels.”
Canine art will include “Steady,” an oil on canvas by Arthur Fitzwilliam Tait (1819-1905) ($50/80,000) and Edmund Henry Osthaus’ (1858-1928) oil on canvas of setter puppies ($60/90,000).
Shorebirds will headline the decoys on offer. The Harmon Hollow Nantucket Curlew, circa 1850, hails from the collection of Ted and Judy Harmon ($150/250,000). The form, paint, patina and featherlight construction of this curlew should ignite top decoy collectors. Copley decoy specialist Colin McNair noted, “Of all the Nantucket curlew forms extant, this may very well be the best.”

EAST HAMPTON, N.Y.— The East Hampton Historical Society will host the highly anticipated return of the East Hampton Antiques & Design Show on the grounds of Mulford Farm, Saturday and Sunday, July 16-17.
In celebration of its 100th anniversary, the East Hampton Historical Society will welcome back an all-star cast of honorary chairs from past antiques shows for a special VIP preview cocktail party on the evening of Friday, July 15. Design luminaries include Jonathan Adler, Simon Doonan, Stephen Drucker, Steven Gambrel, Ina Garten, Celerie Kemble, Aerin Lauder, Charlotte Moss, David Netto, Tom Samet, Scott Sanders and Marshall Watson.
In addition to hobnobbing with design aficionados, the VIP preview cocktail party also offers patrons an early buying opportunity from the array of antiques, jewelry, textiles, collectibles and timelessly chic furniture and accessories available at the show. Ticket proceeds from the preview cocktail benefit the East Hampton Historical Society. “As we celebrate our centennial,” said EHHS executive director Steve Long, “the antiques show is critical for our efforts to preserve and interpret our historic properties, provide vital history education for local students and facilitate opportunities for the entire community to engage with the past.”
The East Hampton Antiques & Design Show is widely recognized as the premier antiques and design event on eastern Long Island and a highlight of the East Hampton arts and social calendar. Both the preview cocktail party and the antiques and design show take place on the pastoral grounds of the Mulford Farm, located on James Lane in the heart of East Hampton Village. Maintained by the East Hampton Historical Society, this 3.5-acre property features a restored Seventeenth Century farmhouse as well as several barns and outbuildings that are among the oldest on Long Island.
The East Hampton Antiques & Design Show continues to be well received by collectors and dealers alike. Its popular offerings of wares and art come from a diverse assembly of more than 50 antiques and art dealers, housed in elegant white tents across the farmstead’s greensward.
The focus of the show is on vintage decorative items for the home and garden as well as art. Classic rattan and bamboo furniture, lighting, textiles, architectural elements, American and European country decorated furniture, Art Deco and Moderne, garden ornaments, wrought iron accessories, industrial items, paintings, trade signs, period jewelry, weathervanes and mirrors will be for sale. With a broad range of styles from classic to contemporary represented, there is truly something for everyone.
Admission to the Antiques & Design Show costs $10 for the general public and $8 for East Hampton Historical Society members. Show hours are Saturday, July 16, from 10 am to 6 pm. On Sunday the show is open from 10 am to 5 pm. The Mattitaco Food Truck will provide a food concession during the show.

July 15, 16 & 17 at 10 am

978-927-2223/2228 fax
BEVERLY, MASS. — Kaminski Auctions will conduct a three-day estate auction Friday-Sunday, July 15-17, at 10 am ET.
Kaminski has been commissioned to sell the estate of Consul N. J. Haustrap of Palm Beach, Fla. The contents formerly from his castle in Scandinavia furnished his Palm Beach estate. The collection will be presented in a three-day auction featuring Old Master paintings, Persian rugs, continental furniture, bronzes, glass, porcelain, jewelry, Chinese porcelains and an extensive collection of continental silver.
The top furniture lot is an antique Italian baroque serpentine fruitwood drop-front secretary. The piece features graduated locking drawers with bail handles, a hinged writing surface and a center double arch crest door alcove surrounded by 29 small drawers. The under-shelf has eight arched columns surmounted by an arched scroll pediment and a cornice with a carved scroll and shell. An antique Baltic fruitwood serpentine drop-front desk has molded curved corners, a folding writing surface with a fitted interior and extensive, intricate bone inlay in Neoclassical motifs on all the surfaces.
French furniture features a French Louis XV-style fruitwood marquetry two-drawer bombe commode with ormolu mounts and beveled serpentine specimen marble top and a French antique fruitwood marquetry desk, an Eighteenth Century French paint-decorated two-drawer chest of drawers and a Nineteenth Century boule cabinet.
Swedish furniture in the auction includes a Nineteenth Century Swedish classical empire giltwood mirror having a carved eagle and an accompanying pier table with a marble top labeled “Fraktgod Till Jonkening.” Another antique parcel-gilt pier mirror features swags and pierced scroll pediment, and there is an antique Swedish locking carved wooden box on a turned-wood joint-style stand. The hinged lid is decorated with a gilt and carved foliate panel on the lid interior, and the top is carved with two hex signs and dated 1741.
Fine art begins with a Dutch still life titled “Still Life with Parrot on Balustrade, Draped Table with fruits, flowers, shells,” in the style of Edwaert Collier (Dutch, circa 1640-1707.) There is also a marine painting attributed to Edwaert Collier titled “Ships at Shore, Stormy Sea,” oil on canvas, in a molded, giltwood frame.
Italian paintings from the collection include a Giovanni Francesco Barbieri (il Guercino) (1591-1666), an Italian Renaissance painting, a prominent Eighteenth Century Italian landscape with animals, oil on canvas, measuring 55 by 75 inches, framed; and a Jules Didier (Italian, 1831-1892), oil on canvas, signed “J. Didier” in its original gilt frame with a Paris canvas stamp.
The collection includes other European artists, such as a portrait by Frans Oerder (Dutch, 1867-1944), a portrait by Sir Godfrey Kneller (British, 1646-1723), landscapes by Antoine Watteau (French, 1684-1721), Carl Henrik Bogh (Danish, 1827-1893) and 12 framed lithographs by Willem Wenckebach (Dutch, 1860-1937).
The estate offers an extensive collection of different European silver lots. A highlight is a set of 24 unique hand-chased silver fork and spoon sets with crests, created in honor of the coronation of Sweden’s King Carl XVI Gustaf in 1973. There are sets of Danish flatware, assorted lots of fish and specialty knives, forks and spoons, an antique lobed silver tureen and an antique Russian .875 silver tureen, marked “A. Sper” and “84.” The silver category continues with a Nineteenth Century Frank Smith Silver Co. sterling fancy bride’s basket, a group of Tiffany & Co. sterling items to include a coffee pot, footed tray with gadrooned border, creamer and sugar bowl, and an antique English repoussé silver ewer with ear handle, hallmarked for London C&S Co, 2.
In the porcelain category, there is a Royal Copenhagen Blue Flowers pattern porcelain service for 48 with assorted serving pieces and a Royal Copenhagen Dagnan pattern grouping of 24 platinum banded chargers.
Chinese items of interest include a Nineteenth Century Chinese bulb vase having a five-claw dragon design, sitting on a Nineteenth Century French giltwood base. The piece stands 29 inches high by 17 inches in diameter. There are also several Chinese blue and white charger, and Chinese archaic bronzes.
A selection of various European and American clocks features in the auction. An early Nineteenth Century Thomas Turner, London, chiming long case clock is of particular interest. It features an Adam-style painted case, broken arch pediment and an engraved steel and brass signed face with applied gilt scroll decoration. It stands 100 inches high. There is an Aaron Willard tall clock, an antique Baltic long case clock and a painted case with a pendulum. Mantel clocks feature an antique French rococo clock with a pair of putti and a Louis XIV-style floral inlaid wood elaborate bracket clock with ormolu goddess finial and round repoussé dial with porcelain Roman numerals.
