Wolfs Gallery – Richard Andres Selected Works 1950 – 1975
June 09 – August 20
wolfsgallery.com
CLEVELAND, OHIO — Wolfs will present the exhibition and sale “Richard Andres: Selected Works 1950-1975,” featuring the early works of American abstract expressionist Richard Andres (1927-2013). The show will be on view June 9-August 20.
Richard Andres was an odd combination of an artistic hermit and a figure on top of the latest developments on the contemporary scene. After studying at the Cleveland Institute of Art on a National Scholastic scholarship, Andres immersed himself in painting, spending off-hours at the Cleveland Museum, focusing on artists such as Van Gogh and Matisse. When asked to describe his art, Andres struggled. “It’s hard to describe art. Art is something that’s there, to look at. So, words are very difficult. Essentially, the closest I can come is to say I’m a 1950s painter. The ‘50s was sort of an attitude toward art. It was going to be big. It was going to be strong. This great big group of painters had this attitude toward painting and it’s hard to pin it down because each painter was different. It really is a style that’s hard to define but the term ‘abstract expressionism’ is often used.”
According to 60’s critic Helen Borsick, “Technically, his paintings are abstractions, but that is only part of the story. Andres’ complex style of composition — strong in design and drawing — involves compartmentalizing the canvas with favorite signs, figurative allusions and symbols. Any degree of familiarity with his canvases develops recognition of his painting language and repeated forms as well as of the endless nuances of color tints and overpaint and underpainting methods.”
Some of Andres’ inspiration came from other artists, once stating that Edward Munch, Emile Nolde and Max Beckmann ranked within his top ten most admired painters. While often being his own worst critic, Andres grew content and more relaxed later in life, saying, “For years, I’d do a painting and say, ‘But it’s not good enough. You try to achieve something and you overachieve it but it’s still not good enough. I finally did a painting and looked at it and said, That is good enough.’ From that point on, the older paintings got better in my own mind.”
While with his finger always on the pulse of his more famous contemporaries, Andres was content to simply produce, preferring to avoid the limelight.
Director Michael Wolf of Wolfs describes his discovery of this trove of “masterful abstraction expressionist works” as “a rare and wondrous event,” and comments that it evokes “the heady times of the midcentury American art world.”
A fully illustrated catalog with more than 50 works, including an essay by Dr Henry Adams accompanies the exhibition and can be purchased for $20 post-paid.

Copley Fine Art Auctions – The Sporting Sale 2022
July 14-15

617-536-0030
PLYMOUTH, MASS. — On July 14 and 15, Copley Fine Art Auctions, the decoy and sporting art auction house, will conduct its 17th annual Sporting Sale. This auction, consisting of 675 lots, one of the company’s largest to date, will offer buyers the opportunity to acquire world-class paintings, antique decoys, bird carvings, folk art and powder tins from important collections. The auction will be live-streamed and will utilize phone, absentee and internet bidding on three different online platforms, including CopleyLive, Bidsquare and Live Auctioneers. The auction will begin at 10 am on both Thursday and Friday.
The auction will include offerings from two important du Pont collections, a descendant of Eugène E. du Pont (1882-1966) and a descendant of Thomas Coleman du Pont (1863-1930). The du Pont objects include previously unknown A. Elmer Crowell (1862-1952) bird carvings and 68 antique powder tin lots. Eugène E. du Pont was a personal friend of Elmer Crowell’s and, as such, obtained his decoys directly from the maker. Du Pont’s woodcock, ($70/100,000), mallard drake, ($50/80,000) and blue jay ($15/25,000) are sure to entice bidders. Thomas Coleman du Pont was the great grandson of the company’s founder. Along with his cousins, Thomas bought out the family’s explosives business and then served as the firm’s president from 1902 until 1915. This important powder tin collection features major American manufacturers, such as du Pont, Laflin & Rand, American Powder and King and Hazard.
Copley principal Stephen O’Brien Jr said, “In addition to the estates and private collections, several notable individual works have been consigned to this sale. We’ve been fortunate to land two major Taits in a row. His well-documented “Steady” ($50/80,000), depicting two setters pointing quail, is notable for its bright composition and sublime condition. This painting really speaks to me. Though I grew up a New England bird shooter, I owned and hunted setters, and I have found wild quail second to none.”
O’Brien continued, “The vast majority of the estate pieces are unreserved and carry no estimates, so it should be a very exciting auction for our clients. We really like putting the auction in the hands of our bidders. In an age where many auction firms place high reserves and have unverified results, our ethos is to let the buyers choose their own levels.”
Canine art will include “Steady,” an oil on canvas by Arthur Fitzwilliam Tait (1819-1905) ($50/80,000) and Edmund Henry Osthaus’ (1858-1928) oil on canvas of setter puppies ($60/90,000).
Shorebirds will headline the decoys on offer. The Harmon Hollow Nantucket Curlew, circa 1850, hails from the collection of Ted and Judy Harmon ($150/250,000). The form, paint, patina and featherlight construction of this curlew should ignite top decoy collectors. Copley decoy specialist Colin McNair noted, “Of all the Nantucket curlew forms extant, this may very well be the best.”

PROVIDENCE, R.I. — Bert Gallery is conducting its first online auction on LiveAuctioneers, “Summer 2022,” on Thursday, July 14, at 2 pm Eastern time. Owner Catherine Little Bert said, “It is exciting to expand the gallery outreach beyond 24 Bridge Street in Providence to a wider audience online. It is a steep learning curve, but we are expanding our gallery brain power to promote the ‘Providence School.’”
All of the bidding and purchasing takes place online through the Live Auctioneers platform.
Most of the paintings online are historic American painters acquired by collectors in Providence, the home of several important American painters and active collectors in the Nineteenth and Twentieth Century. Many contributed to the regional American art scene becoming innovators and promoters in the national arena of American painting.
Generations of artists have lived and painted in Rhode Island since the 1800s where a distinct art culture evolved around the Providence Art Club, the Rhode Island School of Design, the Rhode Island Historical Society and Brown University. The Nineteenth Century brought together artists, collectors and institutions that fostered an art culture recognized nationally and internationally.
In-person preview available at Bert Gallery, 24 Bridge Street, Tuesday, July 12, from noon to 4 pm and Wednesday, July 13, from noon to 4 pm or in advance by appointment.
