BEVERLY, MASS — Frank Kaminski’s early June auction — a three day event held June 6-8 — was anchored by the estates of Armour meatpacking heiress, Lolita Armour and United Airlines and Illinois Merchant Trust & Savings Bank executive, John J. Mitchell, Jr. The couple, whose Lake Forest, Ill., wedding in 1921 was considered one of the most significant social events of the time, had homes in Montecito, on California’s Gold Coast, and in the state’s Santa Ynez Valley. Several of the eagerly anticipated highlights of the sale were objects acquired during the Mitchell family’s travels through Asia. Winning the highest price of the three day event at $45,000, including buyer’s premium, was an important Nineteenth Century Imperial Chinese robe, with gold thread and five-claw dragons that survived in what the catalog described as “amazingly good condition.” A representative for the firm confirmed the buyer was on LiveAuctioneers. More highlights from the auction of the Mitchell-Armour estate will be featured in an upcoming issue.
