RENO, NEV. — Coeur d’Alene Art Auction was back in the saddle at Reno’s Peppermill Resort on July 23, generating sales of more than $18 million on Western art. Contemporary fare bested historic offerings this round with “The Long Shot” by modern master Howard Terpning (b 1927) exceeding estimate to bring $1,428,000, including buyer’s premium.
According to the artist, who completed this 32-by-40-inch oil on canvas in 1982, the rifle depicted here is “a Sharps buffalo type, probably in fifty caliber.”
