PORTSMOUTH, N.H. — Derin Bray launched two sessions of auctions on Sunday, November 9, with Tom Christopher’s tattoo collection selling in the morning and Americana in the afternoon. All but one of the 172 lots offered that day sold, led at $12,500, including buyer’s premium, by a hand-painted tattoo flash of an American eagle design attributed to Samuel F. O’Reilly (1854-1909), working in Chatham Square (Bowery), N.Y., circa 1890. The 8-by-6-inch work — done in ink and watercolor on paper that was professionally framed — had provenance to the New-York Historical Society and the Hammond Museum and sold to a new client who is a New England art collector. Watch for an upcoming auction review of both sales in an upcoming issue.
