BEACON, N.Y. – A Chinese porcelain dish with a central image of a stork in a landscape took 88 bids in Hudson Valley Auctioneers’ August 9 sale. Its final price: $118,750, well over the $500 high estimate. The small tobacco dish had shallow walls and a cloisonne-style blue color decoration to the base. It measured 7-3/8 by 7-3/8 inches.
“It had been acquired by the grandmother of the fellow that I dealt with,” said auctioneer Neil Vaughn. “She was a collector of some sort in the 1930s.”
It was not the only porcelain sleeper in the sale as the firm got $55,000 and 101 bids on a Chinese blue and white porcelain vase, 17¾ inches high.
That had come from a Nyack consignor, one the auction house worked with a few years back to sell some art.
“They let go of their Chinese porcelain collection,” Vaughn said. “The vase was drilled as a lamp, and they kept it before because they needed the lamp. It turned out it was the best thing they owned.”
Both pieces are headed to buyers in mainland China, the auctioneer said. He noted they had “countless” inquiries on the two from both domestic and international bidders.
