SOUTH YARMOUTH, MASS. — Charles E. Adams of South Yarmouth passed away on August 1, after a period of failing health in his 90th year.
Charlie graduated from Bridgewater High School and then went on to attend Bentley College. He received the coveted Charter Life Underwriter designation in the insurance field in which he would serve for over 50 years. He was a partner in the Gammons-Adams Insurance Agency for the last 25 years of career.
In 1965, he married Barbara Churbuck, a well-known long-term teacher. They would have celebrated 60 years of marriage on October 10.
During the 1970s and 80s they traveled to Alaska and Hawaii, and nearly every July to countries in Europe. In the 1990s, they became professional antique dealers and took part in quality antiques shows in New England, New Jersey, Pennsylvania and as far west as Michigan.
In 2000, they retired and moved to Bass River Village on Cape Cod. They bought an 1835 Greek Revival home where they lived happily for 25 years. They also owned a summer home on Wilson Pond in Greenville, Maine. They supported the Greenville Historical Society and the Moosehead Marine Museum.
Charlie was very active in his community. He served as treasurer of South Yarmouth Library for 20 years. He was also active in the Yarmouth Rotary Club and the Bass River Yacht Club. Charlie and Barbara were founding members of the Cultural Center where they gave out a music scholarship each year. In recent years he had become a member of the Sons of the American Revolution.
In addition to his wife, he leaves behind a brother, Richard Adams of Tulsa, Okla., and a sister Priscilla Dunn of Nashua, N.H.; sister-in-law Janet Di Mattia of South Yarmouth and a brother-in-law Robert K. Churbuck of West Dennis, Mass. He also leaves behind 15 nieces and nephews from various parts of the country.
A celebration of life was held on Monday, September 8, at St David’s Episcopal Church in South Yarmouth, followed with burial in the Peace Garden. A reception followed at the Cultural Center of Cape Cod.
