It was almost unheard of: Five straight days of blue skies for the May run of the America’s most famous and original megamarket. Huge crowds responded and by 7:30 am, Tuesday, opening day, those looking for a parking space were forced to the outer regions of Route 20 as every lot in the midst of the markets had large signs posted boldly proclaiming them as “FULL.” Crowds packed into The Meadows, Dealer’s Choice and BrimfieldNorth, with the openings at the paid fields, the later two, numbering well into the thousands. Huge crowds were prevalent againon Wednesday at the crack of dawn at New England Motel, then laterat Heart-O-Mart, and then on to an absolutely mobbed field atHertan’s. The trend continued on Thursday at the opening of May’s as the crowd swelled to such large proportions that they blocked the road. Police requested promoter Dick May to open the gates a few minutes early and the crowd swarmed onto the field and traffic once again returned to normal. The opening on Friday at J&J’s was also lively with another record sized crowd on hand to shop the fields. These are just a few of the photographs we have from the fields throughout town. A complete review will appear in a future issue. -DSS
