The outstanding result of $10,382,000 was achieved at Antiquorum’s October 15-16 auction of 371 lots of important collectors’ wristwatches, pocket watches and clocks. In the sale, 80 percent of the lots sold for 150 percent of the value. The interest for pocket watches proved very strong, and, in fact, the top lot of the auction was an exceptionally fine, ultra complicated pocket watch made in 1924 that sold for $1,032,101. Several of the enameled pocket watches and decorative pieces in the sale sold way above their estimates, such as a ring watch by Piguet and Capt, Geneva, made in 1810, that sold for $200,000, almost five times its estimate and a world record in its category. The wristwatches sold well, confirming the stability of themarket, the highlight being a possibly unique wristwatch by PatekPhilippe, Ref 1554 in pink gold made in 1942, that achieved$621,206 and the Patek Philippe Pink Gold Screwed Back Ref 2438-Ithat sold for $509,922. The Leman Salon at the Noga Hilton Hotel was filled with watch aficionados of a highly international character and representatives from various public collections. Absentee bidding was strong from all over the world, especially Taiwan, Hong Kong, China, Russia; by telephone, online and by written bids that had been submitted prior to the sale. The collection had been shown in Hong Kong, enabling the Asian clients to examine the watches and bid on distance at the sale date.
