Co-proprietor of Nancy and Alan Gilbert Antiques in Mountainville, Tewksbury Township, N.J., for more than 30 years, Alan D. Gilbert, 79, died November 29 at Somerset Medical Center. He was predeceased by his wife of 50 years, Nancy Hauk Gilbert, who died September 11, 2008.
He was born in Jersey City on January 7, 1929, a son of Benjamin H. and Martha Nessle Gilbert. He had resided in Summit before moving to Bedminster 41 years ago.
Gilbert was a 1951 graduate of Seton Hall University, receiving a bachelor of science degree in business administration. He served with the National Guard during the 1950s.
Gilbert was a member of the Lamington Presbyterian Church, a member of the Bedminster Township Historical Commission, and had served 25 years as a member of the Bedminster Township Board of Adjustment. He also was a member of the American Society of Corporate Secretaries and the Young Republicans.
He was predeceased by two sisters, Emma Carver and Betty Gilbert.
Gilbert is survived by two sons, A. David Gilbert of Far Hills, N.J., and John H. Gilbert of Gladstone, N.J.; four granddaughters, Libby, Abby, Sarah and Katie Gilbert; two brothers, Benjamin Gilbert of Flemington, N.J., and Richard Gilbert of San Diego, Calif.; and three sisters, Marjorie Gilbert Knipper of Monroe Township, Patricia Sherwood of Palm Desert, Calif., and Dorothy Williams of Brattleboro, Vt.
A memorial service was conducted at the Lamington Presbyterian Church, Bedminster, on December 13. Private burial will take place in the Lamington Presbyterian Church Cemetery.
