On Sunday, January 22, from 10 to 11 am, the Antiques Dealers’ Association of America, Inc, will host a memorial reception and tribute for the late Albert Sack (1915′011) in the Tiffany Room at the Park Avenue Armory in conjunction with the Winter Antiques Show.
No stranger to the Winter Antiques Show, Sack was the face of the firm Israel Sack, Inc, for many years. He was also a respected author, antiques dealer and the first recipient of the ADA’s prestigious Award of Merit.
The middle son of Israel Sack, Albert joined his father’s distinguished firm in 1934, where he established himself as a major force in the Americana marketplace throughout the second half of the Twentieth Century. Sack’s book The Fine Points of Furniture , better known in the trade as “Good, Better, Best,” was first published in 1950 and introduced many thousands to the important subtleties and beauty of American antiques.
Albert is remembered as warm and giving; sharing his vast knowledge through lectures, television appearances and during his visits to antiques shops, shows and auctions.
“I think of Albert Sack as the consummate dealer’s dealer. He had a great impact on the trade. He recognized exceptional pieces when he saw them and had an extraordinary network of friends,” recalled John Hays, deputy chairman at Christie’s.
Guest speakers for the event will include Albert’s son Donald Sack; his longtime colleague and consultant Deanne Levison; and Dr Patricia E. Kane, the Friends of American Arts Curator of American Decorative Arts at the Yale University Art Gallery. All are invited to join the ADA for a moment of appreciation and tribute to one of the leading antiques dealers. Light refreshments will be served.
The Park Avenue Armory is on the corner of 67th Street and Park Avenue.
The Antiques Dealers’ Association of America was established in May 1984 as a nonprofit trade association. Its major objective is to make more professional the business of buying and selling antiques. For more information, www.adadealers.com or 203-364-9913.
