SANTA FE, N.M. — Santa Fe Art Auction celebrated the cultural life and heritage of New Mexico and the American Southwest in its two-day New Mexico Now auction, which was conducted July 23-24. The more than 300 lots of arts and crafts also highlighted early Mexican and Spanish Colonial impacts on the region. The first day’s 167 lots procured the highest price of the sale: a Rio Grande indigo banded blanket, which was bid within its $8/12,000 estimate to achieve $8,610, including buyer’s premium. Made circa 1860 with churro wool and indigo dyes, the blanket measured 93½ inches long and had provenance to a private collection in New Mexico. Additional highlights from both days of the sale will be featured in an upcoming issue.
