DUPONT, DEL. — On June 23, Ford Art Auctions conducted its live Estate Sale from the collections of Charles Deering (Chicago), the Chicago Institute University Library, The National Art Club (New York City) and Chubb Insurance. The highest price of the day was awarded to the oil on board “Madame Vuillard à table” by Edouard Vuillard (1868-1940). A portrait depicting the artist’s mother, it dated from “the height of Vuillard’s Nabis Period, when his pictures were at the most visually textured and saturated with color.” Executed in 1895-96, the work had extensive provenance, as well as publishing and exhibition history. Besting competition from several phone bidders, an American institution placed the highest bid, taking the work home for $2,690,000, including buyer’s premium ($350/550,000).
