LONE JACK, MO. — What was on Soulis Auctions’ schedule June 27? Tradition. Imagination. Auction. The 231-lot sale presented Modernist works, including those in Surrealism, magical realism, Impressionism, Abstraction and more. Soulis cataloged the sale stating that it comprised “The real, the unreal, historical, Western and contemporary in oil, paper and bronze.” “Colorado Narrow Guage,” a 1988 oil on canvas by Tucker Smith (American, b 1940), took bidders on a trip and ultimately stationed as the sale’s highest-priced lot. The painting, which is a “historically-accurate work of Western realism,” was displayed in its original America West frame and showed the Denver South Park and Pacific Railroad train crossing through snow-capped mountains. The 39¾-by-55¾-inch framed work passed its $20/30,000 estimate, selling to a collector for $49,560, including buyer’s premium. Additional results will be featured in a future issue.
