MEDWAY, MASS. — Elegant furnishings at Coyle’s Spring Estate Auction conducted on April 15, delivered remarkable results in today’s market, drawing collectors and dealers from around the country. The event, featured a completely unreserved collection of exceptional antique French and Continental furniture, artwork and decorative accessories, many of which were assembled by the late esteemed designer Ruben de Saavedra over a number of years for the firm’s consigning client to furnish their grand European-style home in Concord, Mass. In addition, furnishings and estates from Boston area homes were also offered.
Standout items in the furniture category included a 91-inch-high, antique carved gilt mirror with a fleur de lis crest which garnered intense bidding and ultimately sold for $11,270, surpassing its expectations; as well as a beautiful pair of bronze marble inlaid gueridon tables which brought $9,200. Other highlights of the auction included a marble and gilt plateau coffee table that sold for $6,095, a palace-sized Persian floral rug that achieved $7,360, and a pair of French Empire figural marble top pedestals and a pair of Ornate Louis XVI-style gilt pedestals with ram’s heads which brought $3,795 and $3,565, respectively.
Marble selections were led by a pair of gilt eagle carved marble top wall sconce shelves, bid competitively to $4,485, followed by a specimen marble top ornate gilt console table which hammered down at $2,415. There were also some standout custom upholstered furnishings offered in the sale highlighted by a pair of Nineteenth Century Louis XVI-style Bergères with floral urn motif fabric which sold for $2,760 and an upholstered sofa with fringe that achieved $1,150. A carved swan antique leather upholstered chair also brought $3,150. Midcentury Modern was also represented by a group of Paul Evans Citiscape dining furniture selling for $9,200.
Silver, jewelry and art were all well represented, as the top lot, a Georg Jensen 111-piece sterling flatware set, sold at $4,025, while a Tiffany & Company Angela Cummings bracelet in 18K gold brought $3,565, alongside additional strong results in gold and silver. Several well-received oil paintings including “Rudi and the Mischievous Tabbies” by C. Neilseen found a new homes, this example with a private buyer for $1,600. A pair of gouache portraits of ladies by Constant Joseph Brochart were well appreciated at $2,415, as well as several other offerings in the category.
The auction saw strong engagement both in-person, on the phone and through absentee bidders, with notable sales exceeding expectations; there was no online bidding.
