SUDBURY, MASS. — A Chinese tou tsai ware porcelain covered jar, which bore the Chien Lung (1735-1796) mark and was of the period, was the star of Tremont’s Annual Spring Fine Arts & Antiques auction on May 4. More than 50 bidders on LiveAuctioneers were watching the 5-inch-tall vessel cross the block; it sold for $67,100. In second place, a pair of Eighteenth Century Chinese cloisonné bowls, heavily gilt, earned $46,360. Both the vase and the well-marked bowls were collected by Gwethalyn Jones (1880-1959), an art collector and patron at the Art Institute of Chicago. The auction was wide-ranging and included good scrimshaw, Twentieth Century glass, woodblock prints and much more. A full report will follow; prices quoted include the buyer’s premium.
